Israel forms emergency government and war cabinet

Israel is forming an emergency government and war management cabinet, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Unity Party leader Benny Gantz jointly announced Wednesday.

Gantz, a former defense minister, will join Netanyahu and current defense minister Yoav Gallant in a “war management cabinet,” the joint Netanyahu-Gantz statement said.

The government will not pass any laws or make any decisions that do not concern the conduct of the war, the announcement said.

That implies that the controversial judicial overhaul will not move forward while the emergency government is in place.

There has been no indication that opposition leader Yair Lapid and his Yesh Atid party are joining the government.

Say what you will about Netanyahu but I'd be surprised if a genuine fake story made it that far up the chain. Hamas throwing Iran under the bus says as much. Luttwaks theory that they are doing this to try and get support from a broader set of (Sunni) sponsors who broker an Israel-Palestine ceasefire with slightly better terms for them is no longer such a huge conspiracy. They saw the rapprochement between Israel and other Arab states and took the initiative to at least slam the breaks on such a development and throw in a black swan event.

Yeah, by the end of the day yesterday it had been confirmed by multiple Western media organizations, not all of which have been sympathetic to Israel. (The journalist who initially broke the story, Haddad, also had a pretty long history of criticism of the Israeli state.) Clearly real even if there was confusion yesterday because somebody made up the number "40".

This thread is a total trainwreck and really difficult to follow because of all the spam, side arguments, and fake news. Could we please keep it a bit more in order?

Some questions:

• What is the status of Israel's ground operations? Is all Israeli territory freed now from the militants, or are there areas where Hamas still holds, or just areas where Hamas group are still roaming in Israel?
• Has Israel launched any sort of ground operation into Gaza yet? Obviously not a full-scale invasion, but like any probing or any border areas they've crossed?
• What is the situation with the Lebanon border?
• What is going on along the West Bank border? Are Israeli settlers and/or troops evacuating or being redirected? Have there been any skirmishes there, or are things very quiet on that side?

I think it is generally fine to report things from trusted news outlets. Even if those things turn out to be false, they are taken seriously on the ground and so may cause panic/will have some outcome on how the conflict is remembered.

It's also fine to question things and to ask for attribution. Not everything is true; some things are merely alleged. As a great world leader once said, no one is the suppository of all wisdom. But don't take anything too certainly unless it is either a statement from someone credible on the ground (...and it may still be lies), or unless it has been up for several hours and corroborated by credible news organizations. For all the criticism these organizations have taken their corruption normally lies in what stories to emphasize and which voices to give undue weight to, not in literally telling lies.
