What did she mean by this?

Presumably if I read my Nathaniel Hawthorne right she means she screwed Matt Gaetz.

Persecuted for ousting McCarthy or persecuted for her apparent love for attention?

New twist:

He might mean it as a threat to the caucus to back him or else, but they might be so enraged that this could swing it for Scalise.

Seems like a poor political move. From what I've read, Scalise was ahead in the count to begin with. Can't imagine Jordan's threat is going to win anyone over to him.

According to Politico, Jordan said he would back Scalise if he wins. He did dodge the question initially though in this report too.

Interestingly, the rumour according to Ken Buck is that McCarthy recruited Jordan to run, due to dislike of Scalise. I wonder if that would mean that Jordan would be more like McCarthy than people think. Maybe he would have more credibility with the far-right and so that could make him a better choice, but Buck wasn't voting for Jordan which just suggests satisfying the diehards is still impossible.

Ciscomani as one of the most vulnerable Republicans also said he just wants the vote to be decided quickly, so maybe the analysis is that public infighting is more damaging than the Speaker choice itself.

Supposedly it has more to do with bad blood between McCarthy and Scalise than anything else. That said, Jordan was a steadfast ally of McCarthy and even chewed out the rebels in January for trying to vote for him, Jim Jordan, for Speaker. McCarthy owes him one on that front; if Jordan had joined in the January rebellion McCarthy would've been toast then and there.

Btw, even if Republicans had won exactly 235 like Democrats did in 2018, I still don't think it would have been enough to elect McCarthy on the first round in January, since he initially only got 203.

223. Kirkmeyer (CO)
224. Herrell (NM)
225. Logan (CT)
226. Kent (WA)
227. Schmitt (NY)
228. Scheller (PA)
229. Bognet (PA)
230. Erickson (OR)
231. Hines (NC)
232. Baugh (CA)
233. Fung (RI)
234. Becker (NV)
235. King (IL)

Of these 13, I'm going to presume Kent would never vote for him and Hines wouldn't vote for him in the first round, but agrees to do so after McCarthy agrees to a specific condition.

In the candidate forum, Ken Buck asked both Scalise and Jordan if Trump won the last election. Both apparently equivocated, and blamed COVID-era voting measures for the loss.

Apparently the moderates in the room looked aghast.

Why? It's not like both of them ever tried to hide that they are proud election deniers.

Those of us who predicted in the days after the 2022 elections that the tiny Republican majority would lead to an ungovernable clown show were pretty much on the mark.

GOP Reps having their phones confiscated and dropped into a bright plastic box like they’re a bunch of school kids, as they enter the meeting to pick their new leader:

As metaphors go for the state of the House GOP…

I don't get why they don't just leave it with a staffer or in their office or something. Probably quicker and I wouldn't trust that pile.

Suggests Scalise has a majority but knows he can't get to 217 like the rules change wants. Especially if the radicals aligned to Jordan remain steadfast.

What’s the point of nominated a speaker in conference? Unless that person gets 217 they’re not gonna be speaker.
