I had always thought it would be hard to get used to but really it seemed normal after about a month.

I have friends who died years ago about whom it still feels weird they're gone but I never knew Liz so don't really care.

The biggest event I missed on Atlas was probably the Queen. Weird to think she’s gone. I was sure she would make 100, but after seeing her at the jubilee I realized (correctly) that we were likely seeing her for the last time.

It was really striking and sad how quickly and drastically she went downhill after Prince Philip's death. Not surprising, though--she was crazy about him from the age of 13!

Even now, reaching 100 is quite hard - many very healthy people go into steep decline in their 90s.

There is some rumour reporting that she had bone cancer, which could explain the rapid weight loss, pain, and weakness. It seemed like Queen herself and the Royal Family knew this was coming. So I wouldn’t be surprised.

It still feels unreal that she's not here.

For some reason it feels like her reign was a lifetime ago for me. Interesting perception.

Any American who cares about the royal family should just move to the UK if they want to be ruled by a monarch. This is a free country.

How does caring about the royal family equal wanting "to be ruled by a monarch"?

There's no reason to care about these people unless you're a royalist simp who wants to swear fealty to them.

I don't think people usually need a "reason" to care about someone.  They either do or they don't.  And again, I really don't get where your hostility is coming from.

This is a free country -> anyone who cares about the royal family should just move to the uk.

Incredible irony.

I'm so sorry. My condolences. We hear about people like you in the news and so on but you never expect it to happen to somebody you know.
Hugs to you and your family.

We fought a war specifically so we could stop giving a sh*t about which chinless geezer the British worship. No self-respecting American should devote any mental energy to tabloid drivel about a dysfunctional family on the opposite side of the ocean.

It's truly sad that Cromwell couldn't finish the job. At least support for abolition has grown a bit recently.

Just today I saw a YouTube video (I think from the Daily Mail) that outlined how their staff learned about and covered the news, and a source at Balmoral is quoted as saying she suffered a fall that morning, which sent her into her final decline.
