Former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon launched a fourth bid for the mayor's seat Thursday with a pitch to reduce crime, bolster city schools and increase access to government services.

WJZ Reporter Stephon Dingle sat down with the former mayor, who says she believes that the third time might be the charm is reclaiming her seat.

"I know that I can do it again," she said. "Maybe not the same way that I did, but with accountability, with focus and being able to lead this city."

Incumbent Brandon Scott and Businessman Robert Wallace are already running.

The Baltimore Sun was recently purchased by David D. Smith, the executive of Sinclair Broadcast Group. It's starting to come to light that Sheila Dixon's campaign is largely being bankrolled by Smith, with his news stations already platforming her with constant town halls and interviews. Smith is also financially supporting her to the tune of $100K.

Dixon remains the frontrunner, with a poll taken in December showing her at 39% to Mayor Scott's 31%, with 10% going to businessman Bob Wallace. Dixon has received the endorsement of State Delegate Sandy Rosenberg (who has been in office since 1983 and endorsed Scott in 2020) and Councilman Eric Costello (who declined to run for mayor himself...he's also the boyfriend of MD-03 frontrunner Sarah Elfreth).

In 2016 and 2020, Dixon was the initial frontrunner but was widely regarded as only being able to win in a split field due to her infamous corruption scandal. This time, however, she seems to benefit from what is effectively a head-to-head contest with Scott.

Incidentally, just as the mayoralty appears to be swinging to the right, the city council presidency appears to swing to the left — with progressive Zeke Cohen leading incumbent Nick Mosby (husband of Marilyn Mosby).

Dixon made a bizarre comment the other day, blaming art students for Roland Park's graffiti problem. Maybe it was just very good graffiti!

There was also a very disturbing moment where Dixon had clothes thrown at her during an interview by her presumable boyfriend.

Fox45 (Sinclair) held a town hall with Dixon only to cut off the live stream after the first question was from an activist who confronted Dixon over her embezzlement conviction.

David Smith’s efforts to reshape the city goes even further.

I missed that David Smith bought the Sun, that's a tragedy. That's also basically all local print news in maryland too. Of course the Banner is entirely bankrolled by one rich guy too. Terrible times. We'll see about Dixon. She definitely kept her support but baltimoreans haven't been into "the fox candidates" in the last few elections.

Only making the gilded era comparison even stronger.

Easier to buy a majority of the council if it's smaller, I assume.

A billionaire buying out the Baltimore city council and running policy himself would be a massive improvement. Hopefully David Smith succeeds.
