How would the political career of the former South Dakota Attorney General have gone had he not killed a pedestrian?

Could he have been a future Governor or member of Congress? He already ran in the Republican primary for US Senate back in 2014 so he clearly had some ambition there.

He's still young enough, and South Dakota's Republican enough, that he wants back into politics in a decade or so, and the House seat, for example, is conveniently open, he probably could win it.

I don’t think so, there were already plenty of SD Republicans whose prospects looked more promising, certainly for the near future. Ravnsborg actually underperformed for a Republican running statewide here in 2018. He defeated his Democratic opponent for AG by 10%, 55-45. While the Governor’s race was much closer, Noem and Ravnsborg were still the only South Dakota GOP candidates running statewide to not receive at least 60% of the vote.

None of the three members of South Dakota’s congressional delegation show any signs of going away anytime soon, and Kristi Noem would be the most obvious candidate to fill a Senate vacancy. Plus there is still Marty Jackley, there’s also Lieutenant Governor Rhoden. The current mayor of Sioux Falls might have some ambition himself. Lots of people who would have stood in Ravnsborg’s way in any case.

Enters late into the 2024 presidential primary, sweeps all states, banishes Trump to the shadow realm, chooses George Santos as VP for regional balance and easily defeats Joel "Brandon" to win the presidency.

And his first official act as prez is to sign a declaration to create a National Atlas Remembrance Day and The Atlas Posters Awareness Month.
