He was in single digits and and it briefly looked like his campaign was finished. How did he perform so poorly the state? Was all of that just fallout from his unexpectedly poor showing in IA? In retrospect, was he just a poor fit for the primary electorate (especially the low number of black voters)?

New England is only matched by the Deep South in terms of insularity.  Sanders and Warren were strong, well-known candidates from neighboring states.

It was answered in another thread that Iowa and New Hampshire favor novelty and regional candidates. Biden was neither. Combine that with his lackluster campaign and anemic fundraising and that's why he tanked so hard in both states.

The simple answer:

Coronavirus wasn't a major issue yet.

NH is a small state that love retail politics. Like Iowa, it rewards those who shake the most hands and go to the most diners, regardless of insignificantness.

The fact that Pete Boot-Edge-Edge did well in both states yet near zero in the rest of the coutnry is proof of this. Hence these two states being....BOOTED from from the early calender!

Biden wisely banked on South Carolina and Super Tuesday states.

This is what I was thinking. It was a risky strategy, but it paid off. Biden didn't much contest New Hampshire and reserved what resources he had for South Carolina.

Yes, Iowa and New Hampshire like novelty/regional candidates.
