Quote
Hundreds of thousands of teachers are protesting in South Korea after the suspected suicide of a teacher that was widely blamed on the burden on educators in a country notorious for its high-pressure education system.

Angry teachers say they face overly harsh demands and even harassment from aggrieved parents, and are calling for legal reform and greater protections.

Up to 200,000 protesters participated in a rally on Saturday, according to the Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations, citing event organizers. And on Monday, an estimated 50,000 teachers stopped work and gathered in the capital to commemorate the deceased teacher, according to organizers – despite authorities’ initial warnings that striking would be considered “illegal.”

The teacher had taught first grade homeroom at the Seoi elementary school in Seoul, and died on campus on July 18, according to an August announcement from the country’s Education Ministry and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, who conducted an investigation into the death. They did not name the teacher.

Two days after her death, the metropolitan education office superintendent, Cho Hee-yeon, said the teacher had made “the unfortunate decision to take an extreme choice,” a common euphemism in South Korea for suicide.

No, the most likely consequence is the long term decline of the North Korean people. 2nd generation Ossies are usually assimilated through disavowal or forgetful of their roots.

it was tongue in cheek, but assuming current trends continue indefinitely (which is obviously very unlikely) the North would eventually surpass the South.

it's not the 90s anymore and the NK birth rate has exceeded the death rate since 2000 and with no migration to speak of (the already very small number of people managing to escape has nearly stopped) they do have a small annual population growth of around 0.35% while South Korea's population is declining (and likely to decline faster in the coming years) so if Korea reunites in 200 years or so the Norks would be in the majority.

I would not trust any data coming from the Norks. It is highly likely their fertility rate has fallen below replacement too.

It is (at 1.8 percent), but it can’t compete with the South Korean speedrunning community.

it already is according to the official statistics (it's currently at 1.8 ), but the population will still increase as long as there are more births than deaths. North Korea's population is projected to be 22.79 million by 2100 and South Korea's 29.54 million.

if North Korea wanted to manipulate their population numbers they'd no doubt have done it a lot more blatantly, the official numbers actually look fairly credible.

It's a tragic symptom of a broken society.
