Quote
An explosive and unsubstantiated allegation that Paris gave the order to shoot down an Italian passenger jet in a bid to kill Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 1980 risks sparking a diplomatic row between Italy and France.

In an interview with Rome daily Repubblica published on Saturday, former Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato claimed that the French air force inadvertently fired a missile that downed Itavia Flight 870 en route from Bologna to Palermo. The crash over the Mediterranean killed all 81 people on board and led to rampant speculation in Italy about the cause.

“A plan had been launched to hit the plane on which Gaddafi was flying,” Amato claimed in the interview, suggesting the strongman ruler was tipped off by Amato’s own former rival, ex-Prime Minister Bettino Craxi. Amato called on French President Emmanuel Macron to respond to the claim, saying “it would be an opportunity for the Élysée to wash away the shame that weighs on Paris.”

Let's also have the truth about the Bologna railway station bombing that same year, in return.

I’d be Gladi…glad when that comes out—if it comes out.

Let's also have the truth about the Bologna railway station bombing that same year, in return.

An investigation that ended this year (actually 2020, three years of appeal confirmed the original sentence) concluded that the bombing was organized and funded by a group of people most notably including Licio Gelli, the head of Propaganda Due. Now P2 had contacts with just about everyone, but I think this just makes the question of going further beyond less relevant, since Gelli worked for many people but ultimately only worked for himself.

Of course Francesco Cossiga had his own theory he repeated various times in old age like he did for many events from the Years of Lead (he was the one Amato claims to have gotten this information about the Ustica massacre from - note that he was President of the Council during both): according to him the attack was actually organized by Palestinian terrorists and carried out by different perpetrators. I find that one of his least believable claims however.
