Why isn't the United States an option?

Not really; if you're demanding I pick one of the two options, yes, especially relative to expectations. But I don't think you could call Eisenhower or especially Dulles, who basically provoked the whole crisis, pro-Egypt in full context.

We didn't support anyone. Which was a big disappointment to the British in particular. It's not like Eisenhower liked Nasser, he just thought the whole thing was an unnecessary distraction from the more important broader US-Soviet conflict which undermined our geopolitical goals in the Cold War (namely winning over the Middle East and convincing the world that we were morally superior to the Soviets, who were invading Hungary around the same time), and warned the British against sending troops in, then when they did refused to support them. This event, which was a humiliation for the British and French, was essentially the death knell for their own colonial empires and firmly established the US and USSR as the only remaining big boys in town.

I thought they sold their (minority) shares to the British?

I mean they weren’t so much a “side” and is the fallback option. This forces people to actually choose.

I’d have thought it made the choice too easy but apparently not.

I picked Israel, as they were right to defend themselves from the Fedayeen and economic warfare in the Straits of Tiran, and their intervention in Egyptian-controlled territory was extremely effective in doing so. However, I believe Egypt was right to nationalize the Suez Canal as they were the original owners, but they should have compensated the British/French owners for it.
