Every single state in the country shifted leftward from 1972 to 1976. Watergate tainted the public perception of the GOP in every part of the country. Additionally, McGovern was a solid liberal, of which the GOP had been losing voters very quickly. Who were these McGovern 1972/Ford 1976 voters?

Probably African-Americans weary of Southern Democrats?

One CA congressional district - the 5th, I think, north of San Francisco, did vote this way.  In 1980, the district went back to vote for Carter, as well.
