Maybe a Tennessee yellow dog who was swayed by the Willie Horton ad? The Volunteer State was the only US state to (imperceptibly) shift right between 1984 and 1988.

Some other southern states didn't swing much. Some southerners might've had good will towards Mondale (because he was Carter's VP) that they just didn't have for Dukakis.
