I just noticed he did so much better in this election than in 2020. What made him do so well even if he lost the state?

Third party voters, caused by Clinton's unpopularity. His margin was actually slightly less than Romney's in 2012.

The same thing could easily happen in 2024. Biden will soon be less popular than Clinton was in 2016.

Third-party -

Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, Evan McCullin, write-in, and all the other third-parties combined for about 9-10% of the Minnesota vote in 2016

In both 2012 and 2020, third-party was about 2.5% of the vote in Minnesota

If you think someone with the approval ratings Trump has is going to win a state that leans decently towards the other party, you are sorely mistaken

Large third-party vote combined with Trump having large gains over Romney in the rural parts of the state, but it was just cancelled out in the Twin Cities suburbs.

In retrospect, why did he lose it so badly in the primaries and to Rubio? It wasn't even Lyin' Ted or Hungry Kasich like other Midwestern States.

High third-party vote and his appeal to the white working class, especially in the Iron Range

Caucus + educated, suburban GOP base. Most of rural Minnesota was ancestrally Dem and the ancestral R parts went for Rubio, like they did elsewhere. But unlike a primary, a caucus was perhaps enough work for the Obama-Trump types to skip it.

Third party voters siphoning votes away from Hillary. A lot of loyal Democratic voters stayed at home on election day also
