I guess it is theoretically possible this is part of the deal Prigozhin struck with Putin and he is only dead on paper. Given his notoriety, I think it'd be rather difficult for him to disappear into anonymity, though, and the obvious explanation is the most likely.

If Prigozhin thinks he can trust this deal then he’s out of his damn mind. You can’t un-cross the Rubicon. Putin is going to kill him when he gets the chance and dismantle Wagner. Putin will never be secure as long as independent groups this powerful are allowed to exist. You have to make an example out of the guy for showing just how “easy” it is to use a private army to make demands.

Then again Prigozhin has never been the most sane individual. He did pull this manic stunt in the first place.

But to make it happen quickly you would need to make a credible case to the Russian people that they and their country won't be harmed.

We can't be certain that he was on the plane, he could have been executed somewhere else earlier, and the plane used as an excuse to cover it.

Wagner and Prigozin should have defected to the West, a credible offer should have been given to them to switch sides.

I'm watching CNN, and they are being very clear about which "facts" of this situation come directly from Russian state media. Per CNN, the Russian state media were the ones who said Prigozhin was on the passenger list. They have also shown the footage of the plane falling out of the sky on Russian state TV, and have even explicitly stated that the thing was missing one of its wings. They have also reported on the gov't launching an investigation into the "accident," but with them openly reporting on the missing wing, it's gonna be hard to claim it wasn't shot out of the sky.

The other theory is that the Russians are planning to blame Ukraine for shooting down the plane.
