Jimmy Carter lost Maine by only one point in 1976, and by just three in 1980. This is a state that never voted for FDR. Maybe Muskie’s influence was still strong?

Basically, the Lost Generation WASP voters who cost FDR Maine were mostly dead by 1976. Combine that with Muskie on the ballot for another term having up-ballot effect as well. In 1980, Reagan spooked New Englanders toward Anderson and made many states close as a result.

Rural New England swung towards Carter in general. His biggest swings in Massachusetts came in the Berkshires while some wealthier and more suburban towns were McGovern-Ford.
