Juventus and Italian legend Gianlugi Buffon announced his retirement yesterday. The goalkeeper was widely considered the best in the world during his playing career, and was the starting goalkeeper for Italy's 2006 World Cup Champion team.

The question is, is he the best goalkeeper of all time?

Lev Yashin is considered to be the greatest goal keeper of all time.

Buffon is definitely Italy's all time greatest Goal Keeper.

Buffon is definitely the best goalkeeper to have played in my lifetime

And he's quite possibly the best goalkeeper of all time as well, although I'm aware of Lev Yashin's reputation

As someone noted on Twitter, 2023-24 will be the first season since 1930-31 in which one of Stanley Matthews, Peter Shilton or Gianluigi Buffon isn't playing.

Buffon is iconic and one of my all-time favourites, but agree with Thersites that I’d pick Neuer here for absolutely revolutionising the position by making it that top goalkeepers now have to also be good footballers.

Goalkeeper is a ridiculously hard position to compare because there's only one per team, but it's quite a statement to say Buffon is definitely the best Italian GK of all-time when Dino Zoff casts such a long shadow.

+1 for Neuer - he wasn't the first sweeper keeper, but his mastery of the art and success made every team want a goalkeeper that is good with their feet.

He is certainly one of the best modern ones along with Courtois, Schmeichel (father), Neuer, and Casillas.

I'd say Victor Valdes would argue against this, but yeah Neuer is an exceptional behemoth in the GK post. I still think Buffon is more iconic in some ways.

Lev Yashin is a legend, but i wasn't alive to see him in action so i can't judge.

Right now probably Courtois who is a dick though.

I think Buffon is the goalkeeper i have the most respect for.
