Charles Percy was a Rockefeller Republican U.S Senator for Illinois from 1966-1984. While campaigning for the U.S Senate in 1966, his daughter Valerie was murdered in their home.

Despite considerable police effort, the case was never solved.

1."By then, Sharon was in love with Jay Rockefeller, scion of the wealthy family of American industrialists and politicians. Valerie was unattached, although she had plenty of admirers."

Jay Rockefeller the future Governor and Senator from West Virginia?

2. This is quite the interesting case. Since all close contacts (relatives, friends, ex-boyfriends, etc.) were cleared, it seems the crime was committed by someone random. I wouldn't think it was done by someone for political or ideological reasons, as it would be strange to commit such an act and then never claim responsibility,  write some kind of manifesto, or at least mention it to other people (probably while drunk).

Maybe it was committed by some random dude that developed a weird obsession with Valerie after seeing her in the newspaper or at campaign and other public events with her father?

It says she "Valerie returned home soon after college graduation in the late spring of 1966 to help in their father's campaign for a United States Senate seat", after all.

3. The Malchow guy doesn't seem to fit the crime. He's described as this professional thief who could steal all manner of things and even escape from police custody. That doesn't line up with stabbing a young woman 14 times, without stealing anything from the Percy house.
