This is how many times each state voted Republican from 1968 to 1996

SAFE R = 8/8 TIMES
LIKELY R = 7/8 TIMES
LEAN R = 6/8 TIMES
TILT R = 5/8 TIMES
TOSSUP = 4/8 TIMES
TILT D = 3/8 TIMES
LEAN D = 2/8 TIMES
LIKELY D = 1/8 TIMES
SAFE D = 0/8 TIMES

Really puts into perspective how Republican the country was during the last few decades of the 20th century

This map would be much better, much more accurate, and much more useful if it was based on average margin of victory, or average lean relative to the nationwide popular vote.

At the presidential level; the average results at the congressional level sadly tell an entirely different story.

The idea of an election where Minnesota was the only state(alongside DC) to not vote R would be unthinkable today.

This might have been part of the reason why RCP was so bullish for Bush in 2000 (along with the expected high Nader vote)
