The least surprising of developments. And Jennifer Carroll Foy will take her congressional seat, completing the game of musical chairs begun in 2021.

Likely/Safe D; Youngkin can't run again and Trump will likely be President in 2025.

Lean D, on the verge of being Likely D. I’m curious who the rest of the slate is. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jay Jones is the AG nominee and Roem runs for Lt Gov maybe if Wexton doesn’t retire.

Starts out as Lean D with her as the presumptive nominee I guess. She’s sitting on $1.2 million in her account.

VA-7 will also be fine for Dems. It is Biden +7 with the most Dem trending parts of the state in southern Prince William and Stafford.

I'm willing to bet the primary field clears for her.

I'm curious which of Jason Miyares and Winsome Sears is the Republican nominee. I don't think both run (whichever of Miyares and Sears does not run for Governor likely runs against Warner for Senate in 2026 instead.), but either way, this is a Lean D race to start.

Isn’t Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney thought to have a strong interest in this race? Spanberger starts out as a strong contender, to be sure, but I don’t know if we should expect an uncontested nomination.

Stoney would be the frontrunner for Senate in 2026 if Mark Warner decided to retire. Barring that, he could run for Lieutenant Governor, and essentially be the nominee-in-waiting in 2029.

Congratulations to the next governor of Virginia.

No!!! we should all say she will LOSE and be BLOWN out!

Do not jinx it!

Of course with the primary results last month in VA.. I am worried Dems would nominate someone like Dr. Eric Fingle Dingle, JCF, or some utter nutCase

Good for her. Solidly in the pack of "not a fan but not terrible enough to lose my support in the general".

Good for her. Solidly in the pack of "not a fan but not terrible enough to lose my support in the general".

She encapsulates a lot of the 2018 House Democratic class that flipped seats: moderate in terms of tone and rhetoric, but is not moderate at all if you look at her voting record in the House. She gets away with having it both ways because she gets into public spats with the fringe left, like the Squad. I can’t think of a single notable thing she has ever voted with Republicans on, unlike Golden, Peltola, MGP, Kind, Vazquez, Cuellar, and Davis.

She voted with Biden 100% of the time. She is okay but not super strong, having barely outperformed Biden in 2020 and underperformed Biden 2020 in 2022, in a left-trending seat. Unlike Golden, she didn't have to do anything remarkable to win after her initial win in 2018; running even with Biden was enough every time.

This is probably enough to win a state like VA, especially when Trump is President.

It’s probably enough to win Virginia even under a Biden 2nd term. Lest we forget McAuliffe won in Obama’s 2nd term when Virginia was far less blue.

Spanberger is a Democrat I'd consider voting for under certain circumstances.  She's not a raving lunatic, unlike most of the Caucus these days.

"Joe Biden wasn't elected to be FDR; he was elected to be normal and stop the chaos."  So said Ms. Spanberger in 2021.  If only Biden stuck to that script.

No one said she wasn’t good at playing the game. Otherwise she wouldn’t have won a Trump +6 district in 2018 in the first place.

Dueling members of congress is weirdly exactly what I expect for a VA governor election.

My post shouldn't be taken for an endorsement.  I would undoubtedly endorse the Republican nominee to ensure that the work Youngkin has done for Parents Rights when it comes to public schools is not undone.
