Wildfire disaster relief aid of 2023

1. $300,000,000 shall be budgeted for disaster relief to aid in recovery from the wildfire in Colorado.

2. $75,000,000 shall be budgeted for disaster relief and foreign aid to help Canada fight and recover from the wildfires in their country.

This legislation shall come into effect immediately.

The ongoing Wildfires in Colorado have brought significant property damage and thousands of acres burned. It is imperative that we budget money to help Colorado get back on it's feet.

In Canada, the still ongoing wildfires there have left the Canadian Government asking for our aid. Lincoln has already done its part, but there is much more help that needs to be done for our friends up north. What's going there is affecting us here, with wildfire smoke affecting citizens across Lincoln in recent weeks. Canada needs our help, and it would be cruel to let our neighbors suffer when we can help them.

I support this measure, particularly the funding to Canada. I think this is one area where you can not possibly argue that foreign aid is "not our problem."

Unless anyone objects, I move for a final vote on this bill as soon as the necessary debating period is over. This is an emergency and Congress ought to act sooner rather than later.

I'd like to deeply thank Senator NYE for introducing this bill without a moment to waste. This relief is indeed paramount to making a significant difference in our recovery efforts, and I hope that the Senate shall be able to send it to my desk quite soon. I will just note that the administration is currently awaiting official estimates from the GM team on the extent of damages and the compensation necessary. For that reason, I would advise to postpone the final vote until that information comes in and we first have a chance to fully optimize our aid package.

After now hearing back from the GM team, we have gotten word that the damages have already surpassed the amount of aid originally written in this bill. High-population areas across the Republic are about to be impacted for much greater impending severity. To be proactive, the administration requests a lump sum amount of $300 million to be amended and passed immediately.

I'll formally introduce this amendment. I'll also formally object to the motion for a final vote which will hopefully be withdrawn. More than 24 hours have passed since the motion was made but it was originally made too early afaik so at the earliest the 24 hour objection period should expire just after midnight tonight.
