Uh...this sounds concerning.

If it’s actually diluted to less than 1500 Becquerel/liter it shouldn’t be a problem. Tritium even occurs naturally in trace amounts.

Many bodies, including the IAEA, point out that nuclear plants around the world routinely and safely release treated wastewater containing low levels of tritium.

A spokesperson from the US’ Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a government body, confirmed to CNN that “virtually all nuclear plants in the US discharge water containing low levels of radioactivity to the waterway on which they are located.”

“Tritium cannot be filtered out, but a member of the public would have to ingest a significant amount of it for there to be even the possibility of a health concern and radioactive water released is greatly diluted by the flows in the waterway,” the spokesperson added.

Are you on Exxon's payroll now BRTD, or are you actually fearmongering about nuclear energy for free?

A minor concern, but no more than that.

This will dilute massively as soon as it enters the ocean. The active chemical of concern will be back to normal crustal abundancy levels in the fine deep water sediment within days.

Strangely, the more the radioactive elements spread north, south and east, the better the situation becomes in terms of concentration.

Water is an amazing solvent. That is why washing your hands with water and soap is so effective. It dilutes literally everything.

We did an experiment once in Chemistry at University about how much water dilutes chemicals, and after two washes of a solvent, the numbers remaining were ridiculously low.

That's good to hear.
Of course, Japan wouldn't have been doing this if they didn't already know it was safe.

Well that logic doesn't necessarily follow, unfortunately.

Though in this case the risk does appear acceptably low.

"South Korea opposition leader starts hunger strike over government policy"

South Korea's main opposition leader began a hunger strike on Thursday to protest against government policies, including the passive stance taken over Japan releasing treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific ocean.

This is the guy who lost to Yoon in the 2022 election by 0.8%

What is the likelihood this will amount to anything?

His goal is to get the ROK to implement the same policy as PRC: ban all aquatics products.  Popular opinion on ROK is clearly for such a move but doing so will blow up Yoon's entire effort toward rapprochement with Japan and there is no way he will back down.  The main risk Japan is taking of course is that all this is likely to change after the 2027 ROK Prez elections.

One of the key criticisms of environmental groups like Greenpeace is that they neglect the science. We have so many environmental science projects on the planet now, there is no way a country would do this without proper studies and consideration.

welllllllll

I'm sure Japan did their homework, but even that isn't really a 100% guarantee.  But if we didn't do needed things unless they were 100% safe for everyone and everything, we'd never get anything important done.  Thus, I have no problem with this.

and certainly many other countries would (and have, and will again) do this without proper consideration.

I wouldn't put it past China or Russia to do this without proper consideration. Japan though, I agree.

Yeah, I can't imagine North Korea would bother considering things carefully. Too much effort when you can just say the Supreme Leader was praised by everyone around the world for his amazing leadership.
