Now Republicans can turn the election into a choice between family and porn. What a disaster for democrats.

Most people aren't in favor of draconian, nanny-state porn bans. Even if they were, a random tweet would in no way decide the outcome of this election. 0/10 troll post, you can do better than this.

I think an election fought on porn would end badly for the Democrats, but it isn't going to be fought on that. The party in general is broadly conservative on the issue as is, or at least further liberalization is a fringe view held only in corners of the Internet like these which contain too many sheltered young people. The election will be fought on whether or not Youngkin should have a blank check, and I feel confident that Democrats will win that fight. I imagine abortion will also play a big role as an R trifecta in VA may very well move to impose abortion restrictions.

Perhaps you are the sheltered one, not the rest of us. I was in Morris County (Parsippany) two days back for a few hours and judging by what I saw there and seeing people there and going to places and hearing people; you seem to be the sheltered one, not me.

lol, if anything this is going to be better for dems lol. The people that are rabidly anti-porn vote GOP already (mostly). Instead you'll have a number of mostly apolitical people have a big inconvenience that will make them think

tbh, I'd be even more willing to vote for her, too funny and relatable.

Tell me you didn’t read the whole thread without reading the thread

It was her criticizing Youngkin for not creating an age filter for porn and passing the buck onto porn companies

Most people aren't going to send their ID into any kind of verification system if they believe they are basically adding themselves to a register of people who look at porn. Especially given how often data breaches occur.

I doubt this was lost on lawmakers. It's probably the point.

Most likely what is lost on them is that these laws are extremely easy to get past with a VPN, which tech-savvy kids will have no problem doing. And there's definitely more people who will do that than submit their personal information. What's ironic is that the people who will be most affected by these laws are the less-tech savvy, so mostly older people. Unless mildly inconveniencing people was the whole point.

Still, maybe if Lucas doesn't like the law then she shouldn't have voted for it. It passed the Senate with only three members (including Chap Petersen!) opposing it.

Imagine if this ID requirement was put into effect nationwide. Almost no one is going to go to any pornography website that requires them to hand over their ID, but there's too much money and clicks in pornography for it to go away. Instead American audiences would just go to websites that completely ignore these laws, which are obviously going to be a lot shadier than something like PornHub. If the porn websites are basically turned into sex crime rings overnight because of some stupid ID requirement, they'll already be operating outside of the law so it takes away their incentive to follow other regulations like verifying the ages of their performers, moderating content to remove revenge porn, etc. Making it safe and easy to view the porn that normal people actually want to see is why there is no reason for these platforms to risk breaking the law over whatever money is to be made from shadier or downright evil porn. Legislation like this seems like a very short-sighted virtue signal.

As the saying goes, "Twitter is not real life."

This won't be a focus of the Virginia General Assembly campaigns.

I'm not sure why this would be something Virginia Republicans would even bother to attack Democrats on.

It's something the electorate will forget by November, let alone by 2025.

If it weren't for the fact that her district is a VRA district, I would say she would be in at least some danger of losing reelection herself, but this shouldn't affect more than just her race.

I don't think this will be decisive, but VA Dems have had a "terminally online" streak recently that looks unserious and isn't helping their cause.  This is an extension of that.

The logic here appears to be that voters pay so much close attention to Elon Musk's digital fiefdom that most Virginia voters are going to be aware entirely of everything that 1 out of 40 of their State Senators tweeted and will be so enraged that ones in other districts will vote Republican just to punish her.

There might also be another way this pans out. Namely, the election is close and Rs do a decent job holding on, making this seat decide control of the chamber.
But yeah, it's quite a reach even then. I'd be a bit surprised if a state legislator was even primaried because of...a tweet.

This is a Biden+31 district.

If you think that "require an ID to view porn" is a winning issue for the GOP to run on, you are severely out-of-touch.

I don’t think a forum full of young men who spend too much time online is a place to get the median opinion on pornography. Adapting long-standing common sense regulations to the Internet is a mainstream position.

This is by far the most outlandish and absurd take i've ever seen here. No she has not. I doubt many across the state care what one state senator in a safe district has to say.

No it isn’t. I’ve never seen data to suggest that anybody beyond the usual loony Christians care at all about porn. This is once again religious conservatives forgetting that they make up a quarter of the population at best even if they make up 100% of their social circle lol
