Where are you getting these maps from Adam?  Are you making them yourself based on data you've observed or is there a website you are looking at that has all these maps available?

Percent of Disabled Persons by State:

The West apparently does not like the Special Olympics.

I'm guessing Black Lung Disease counts as a disability.

Percent of Population with Advanced Degree by State:

National average = 8.9%

Key: Dark Red = >2.5 above national average
        Red = above national average
        Blue = below national average
        Dark Blue = <2.5 below national average

Lowest: ND (5.5%)
Highest: DC (21.0%)

Interesting how this map predicts the 2004 Presidential winner in 40/50 states...

Interesting. I made other map, pretty simple:

Population Density (People per square mile):

I'm also working on nationwide map that displays the average income by county; the progress can be viewed here:

The density might also be more informative at the county level. For instance, in IL the seven counties in the Chicago area make up 7% of the state area but together have a population density twice that of NJ. The remainder of the state would have a pop density about the same as neighboring MO.

Let's diverge a little:

Dropout Rate by State:

Indiana and Arizona?  Those aren't the states I'd expect to be the two worst in this category, to say the least.

Clearly, Hoosiers realize that they merely have to state "I was born in or lived in Indiana" in order to get a job anywhere.  Duh.

That or, perhaps, better reporting of statistics combined with laws that make it easier to drop out?

Whenever I get this one done, I'll start on the density.

Arizona has more men, despite being such a retirement area?  That's odd to me.

I suspect that the majority of immigrants from Latin America tend to be men.

That makes me wonder why Florida is not also majority male given that something like 60% of Cuban refugees are male.

Because most retirees are women?

Adam,

That's awesome.  Good job.  Just one quick thing - could you consider saving in a different format than BMP?  Like PNG?  BMP is uncompressed and takes a while to load, especially on 56K.

I never realized how wealthy of an area the Minneapolis metro area is. The whole subruban area forms a ring of over $60,000 incomes around the city.

I know. I nearly soiled myself while I was coloring it in. I figure the ring comes from the fact that there are two metropolises in such close proximity, and unlike the Mid-Atlantic megapolis, there is room for the richies to move out in all directions.
