Kind of makes sense, dramatically, that he dies with the Second Republic. (Fwiw do Italians now speak of the modern era as the Third Republic? There was never such a decisive moment as that election where DCI and co all met their maker, but the current era is clearly a completely different universe than the Second Republic.)
The idea that we are entering a Third Republic has been a thing since at least 2013 (possibly before, but my memory is imperfect), but ironically I think this has fizzled out in recent years. I struggle to remember when was the last time the term appeared in a conversation I had, and I have political conversations quite often. I won't be surprised if this debate achieves renewed prominence now as a result of Berlusconi's death however.
2013 is a good mark when Italian politics were between anti ane pro-Berlusconi camps and he was top dog in Italian right.
2013 was the election that started to unravel the Second party system, but I actually think we are swinging back towards it now. Not the in parties or personalities of course, but in the polar electoral dynamics (though this will depend a lot on the oppositions' antics).
