To be honest, the thought had in fact crossed my mind before I first travelled to the U.S.

But ultimately it didn't keep me, because the statistical chances were still negligable and there are much more dangerous places in the world.

Growing up I'd always been under the impression that America was a really dangerous place for that reason and not worth ever visiting.

Nowadays I don't feel so strongly about it and would visit the US given a reason to, just like one would visit any other place else in the world which has risks, but safety would still certainly be a thing on my mind (I'd be careful to look up which cities are the worst for gun violence, etc)

Why would a tourist go to a public school?

It crossed my mind but it's not like I would ever visit the seediest parts of a city.

Why would a tourist go to a public school?

They happen in other places too. Just look at the 2017 Las Vegas one.

Guess Who?

I guess when I come to US next, you take your chances.

You are statistically more likely to die in a car accident than a random mass shooting.

It's really scary to some degree, especially if you are a woman and visit a hood. Or go out at night alone. Even as a man. I mean, European cities have also become more dangerous over the past 20-30 years, but women can generally walk around alone, even at night. I've seen some videos from hoods in the US and I wouldn't go there myself. Just the more popular and safe places. Other than certain crime-ridden areas that you should avoid, the US is generally safe to travel and comparable to Europe. I would like to travel to the US West Coast some time.

As someone raised by people who moved to the US, rather than other options, substantially for gun rights (and kind of didn't comprehend that they were even controversial within the US), this discourse strikes me as very strange.

No (sane, former St. Louis, Missouri resident).

People like you must be why Airbnbs in the bad parts of towns are so cheap. (I'm privileged in some ways -- I'm a man and in decently good shape and also get along with people easily -- but sometimes the mind really boggles).

The US is way safer than many other popular tourism countries. Tourists aren't generally walking around the rough parts of Baltimore at night.
