With incumbent Ken Paxton facing impeachment, and with removal from office possible, who, in your opinion, will be the next Attorney General of Texas?

I'm presuming she won't run again, and that Abbott wouldn't appoint her if Paxton is removed from office, but that's a good point.

She was purportedly on Abbott's short-list when what's bringing Paxton down now first came up 2-&-a-1/2 years ago, & may have only even ran last time because of the legit possibility that Paxton could be indicted & resign/removed at any moment, positioning her to be appointed Paxton's successor by Abbott & already be well into a campaign to win a full term.

It's not even a guarantee the votes are there to convict.

I mean...

If he appoints an interim while he is suspended from office (during impeachment, officers are suspended from office) it might be only three weeks long. He will wait it out and not announce until he is for sure gone.

I mean for all the storm and fury, the end result seems likely to be eventual removal. More friends of Cornyn than Cruz.

So whose next?

Fascinating map.  Impeachment won 17/2/1 among DFW area R's, 42/12/1 among R's outside of the major metros, 2/1 among Bexar R's, and tied 1/1 among the 2 Austin area R's.  Retaining Paxton won 7/6 among Houston area R's.  This suggests the remaining metro R's could be more willing to circle the wagons than the rural R's, which is fascinating.  FWIW Paxton is from the DFW suburbs.

This would seem to be a strong signal the senate is ready to remove him.  Over 80% to impeach, even just hours after Trump called it a witch hunt.

Wouldn't shock me.  Seems like a plausible path for R's to hold the state.

George P Bush seems like the least stupid choice, so it won’t be him.

I don’t think it’s been mentioned but part of Paxton’s impeachment has to die with getting his mistress a job in Austin in 2020. Ken Paxton’s wife – Angela Paxton – is a state senator. She was aware of it in 2019 and (assumedly) thought it ended then. I don’t know and we may never know what she knew when, but she will be one of the ones to vote in her husband’s removal trial

All eyes on Sen. Angela Paxton as Texas Senate takes up her husband’s removal
Quote
Ken Paxton helped elect his wife, Angela, to the state Senate. That chamber will now consider whether to remove him from the attorney general’s office. She has not said whether she will recuse herself.
