San Fransisco's mayoral elections next fall with unpopular incumbent London Breed eligible to run for another term.

Already Breed has a challenger, as Supervisor Ahsha Safai has entered the race.

San Francisco District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safai made official Monday what has long been rumored: He's going to challenge Mayor London Breed in next year's mayoral election.

The only other rumored challenger so far is the CEO of Tipping Point Company, Daniel Lurie, but with the election being a year and a half away, there is still time for candidates to enter the race.

San Fran should consider an Independent who is not partisan or have ties to GOP/Dems

The city is losing businesses....

San Franciscan politics is never boring! One of the few remaining machine cities in America these days. I almost feel bad that this was moved to a Presidential year, where it may get drown out as political media focuses elsewhere.

Breed is kind of odd in that I don't think she may fans or many supporters, but at the same time I think the job of being Mayor right now is unattractive enough to dissuade some of the more ambitious people (not unlike New York's 2021 election).

Very curious if there's a rich outsider Caruso-like candidate who may try to jump in. Their base is automatically much smaller than that of Los Angeles, but could still make for an entertaining race.

It's worth noting that local elections are nonpartisan in California. While candidates here do advertise being endorsed by the CA Democratic Party for obvious reasons, it is generally not a prominent factor in the campaign.

San Francisco voter here. Safai and Breed are both moderate/conservative democrats and there isn't much variety between those choices. I would like to see a progressive socialist like Dean Preston run for mayor. I would love for Brooke Jenkins to lose to a progressive in 2024.

I am happy about the elections being moved to a presidential year. I didn't want to give our awful mayor and DA another year in office by postponing our municipal elections to 2024 but it seems higher turnout = younger voters, more progressive voters, and less spending on conservative candidates and issues. Most people just don't vote in off year city elections and this has allowed fascist minority rule over San Francisco. I agree with your take about Mayor Breed. People don't like her. Even many "tough on crime" moderate/conservative democrats are done with her because she's all talk and no action. She narrowly won by 1 point in 2018 and since then she has not had a real challenger to take her on. I can only hope that changes in 2024.

Presumably Safai wouldn't have gotten into this race without feeling like he had serious support. I haven't been following San Francisco municipal politics too closely of late, but in the only issue that matters, he's saying the right things, talking about reducing permit-related delays for new construction. Breed is saying the same things and they've both introduced legislation to do something. I don't know whose plan is better and since I'm not a San Francisco voter I don't really need to.

Safai running makes sense in the context of people believing that, as said above, Breed is all talk and no action. What he talks about is not really doing anything radically different but doing it competently. The perception of Breed's incompetence will be a very painful blow to the myriad posters on this forum who demand that every elected office in California be filled by London Breed and complain about Barbara Lee usurping her birthright.

There is obvious space in the race for someone like anti-housing activist Dean Preston to jump in. Such candidates don't ever win mayoral elections in San Francisco, so maybe he'll keep his powder dry, but surely someone needs to speak up on behalf of the parking lots of the city.

I would love to see Jane Kim have a run either for this or to make sure Nancy Pelosi isn’t replaced by just another tool of the real estate industry (yes, I’m talking about Scott Weiner)

Daniel Lurie announcement is imminent.

Quote
Daniel Lurie, the founder of anti-poverty nonprofit Tipping Point Community and an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, intends to challenge San Francisco Mayor London Breed in next year’s election, The Standard has learned.

The native San Franciscan has yet to formally announce his candidacy or file paperwork to begin fundraising, but a half-dozen sources with knowledge of Lurie’s plans to run for mayor said he has been hosting gatherings to rally support. He’s also been working to recruit staff and receiving help from political consultant Tyler Law, a partner at Thematic Campaigns, whose firm has handled state and national races, including presidential campaigns for Barack Obama and Pete Buttigieg.

“I don’t think there’s a lot of stealth happening at the moment,” said a source with knowledge of the open secret that Lurie plans to run for mayor.

Another source who has met with Lurie said that he “is definitely running—100%.”

Who will be the centrist millionaire who runs against a defund the policer and ends up losing by 5-10% because he said a nice thing about Republicans 15 years ago in this major city?
