I guess floorwork will serve as good entertainment until I take off...

Quote

This is absurd and probably unconstitutional. A wealth cap would disincentivize innovation and suffocate sentiments of aspiration. There is no motive for people to work hard and seek promotions in such a case.

Motion to table.

How is this unconstitutional? Any lawyer or politician who makes half a Mill a year is obviously a crook.

This is a based bill that ensures the ultra rich pay their fair share. Lawyers are a monopolistic group that artificially freeze out competitors to boost their own profits. The U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that the lawyer guilds are quasi-governmental due to their guaranteed by law monopoly. Subjecting them to a reasonable income cap is good policy and a fair tradeoff for allowing them to keep their cartel.

Ditto for politicians.

While I would support a wealth tax, this is excessive, quite frankly.

I will not be voting for this.

I would support this law to officials. I come from a country where officials invent their own salaries, causing monstrous damage to the country's budget. It also makes sense for government lawyers.

Restricting private lawyers is anti-constitutional. If private lawyers create some sinister monopolies, let the antimonopoly committee deal with it.

Amendment to clean up language and hopefully make this more palatable. This limits it to only government employees since trying to make this apply to private lawyers is questionable as Oleg pointed out.

The Curbing Greed for Attorneys and Politcians Act

A. This bill was an initial amendment for the Maximum Wage Act which I had modified to a separate bill for both attorneys and politicians No Greed for Government Officials

1. The total annual cap of earnings for an employee of the Government of Lincoln will be placed at a total of $460,000 $500,000 a year adjusted annually for inflation. Any income that exceeds that will be subjected to a 100% income tax on all further income for the rest of the fiscal year.

Thank you Speaker Dwarven,

As AG Reactionary had noted, there’s no reason any attorney or politician should become filthy rich. The profit and overall wealth divide makes it so that attorneys and politicians sponsored by wealthy individuals have an unfair advantage compared to public defenders and politicians who do not receive generous campaign donations. This will level the playing field and weaken the oligarchy that gives people an unfair privilege due to the wealth they’ve received.

I think the difference between $460,000 and $500,000 is insignificant enough and I like the simple wording. I agree to the adoptions.

I also agree with the amendment. But the upper threshold will be interesting to discuss.

What was the average salary in Lincoln last year?

Question to Christian Man: on the basis of what was the cap calculated exactly at $460,000?

The cap was similar to FDR's initial proposal for a maximum wage adjusted for inflation.

Thank you, Senator. The cap of $500,000 seems high to me, given that my salary as governor is less than $300,000. But in the future it will be possible to add amendments to this act if someone decides to abuse it.
