I am talking about moving left of the Democratic Party on social issues, economic issues, foreign policy issues, and cultural issues. In essence, the Republican Party becomes more socially progressive, more economically left-wing, more dovish, and more culturally liberal than the Democratic Party.

How would this impact elections? Would the Republicans do significantly better among working-class voters, young voters, and minority voters? Would the Republicans do significantly better among women? Would the Republicans do significantly worse among evangelical voters? Would the Republicans be dominant in New England, the Rust Belt, and the Pacific Northwest? Would the Republicans lose their grip on the South?

Of course it should - remember that perhaps the most important reason Black voters now vote mostly Democratic when they originally voted mostly Republican was that Democrats managed to outflank Republicans on Civil Rights during the middle of the 20th century.

But the main problem is that Republicans are beholden to their base and their donors - neither of which want them to outflank Democrats from the left.

The Republican would probably benefit from moderating a bit, but I don't know why'd ever go left of the democrats. Maybe if they were to go left on economics but stay right on social issues, that could be a sweet spot.

Wouldn't you just have have another party switch if they did that? If the GOP moves left, current liberals in the Dem party would join it while most conservatives would become Democrats and move that party rightwards.

That's the current swing voter group, but they are also a declining share of the population.  IDK how that would work out?

That could be inevitable as the Democratic Party collects the best-educated people whose class interest will eventually be more libertarian in economic interests. This is not a matter of what is best for the GOP; it might simply be the scraps. Add to this: populist agendas take wild swings from Right to Left and back. Remember well that anti-capitalist ideologies can as easily be extreme Right  (southern planters who did not want manufacturing industry as an alternative for farm workers) as extreme Left (Commies, for example).

Trump has exploited more than his share of leftist memes.

I’d certainly be happy if they did, though they never will, since they’d lose almost all of their base.
