Should government be viewed as simply a means of maintaining law and order and protecting the weak from the strong and the have-nots from the haves, or is the disciplinary ethos of a powerful state inherent to a nation's character?

My vote should be obvious.

When I passed my Christian Ultranationalist phase in around 2018, I have continued to subscribe to the view that government and authority in general is a necessary evil, although I have constantly evolved on my beliefs on how to either solve or atleast soften my qualms about government. Does it atleast stem from me always being paranoid(and still am) about my parents checking up on my activities on a daily basis (even if it's simple and tame as Minecraft videos)? Possibly, but I feel as if it's also due to me feeling like I've naturally been ostracized from common society due to my Autism. Alas, you win some and you lose some.

Also, I've meet some of those edgy teenagers listed in your third option, and even though their beliefs are not rooted in reality whatsoever, I'm glad to have them in my life regardless.

It's both.

The goal is for it to one day be unnecessary.

But in the meantime, it's something less than ideal (necessary evil) that's needed to do bare minimum good (necessary good) and the capacity to do even more good.

As a former and likely future public sector worker, I am obligated to say "necessary good".

Rational self-interest here.

Necessary good. The goal is to establish justice, which often - not always - happens. Justice is first defined by the legislative branch, then enforced by the executive and judicial branches.

As necessary. The point of politics is to make it a good.
