Given the politics of the current SCOTUS, what are the odds that they take up the case immediately, bypassing NY court of appeals, and overturn a conviction?

Low I think. I doubt they want to touch this at all or even take the case but it would go up through the chain first.

Please explain it to me, why they wouldn't take this up immediately?

If Trump is convicted and they consider the charges unconstitutional, they should immediately intervene to prevent election interference.

I think you have a loose grasp on how the court system works.

There is a possibility for them to intervene immediately.
Therefore, what I'm suggesting here is well within the notion of "how the court system works".

There isn’t. You may be thinking of Trump’s federal court cases where SCOTUS was asked to step in to rule on a district court decision early, bypassing the court of appeals. But state court cases have to go to the state’s highest court before being appealed to SCOTUS.

We'll see about that.

No he has to stay in the courthouse.
Wow, another procedural mistake by Ljube, who could’ve guessed

(Ok, I’m done now.)

If today, it's a guilty verdict.

That's interesting.  Odds of a mistrial increasing?

I'm curious.  Why would you think that?

Prediction: If Trump is found guilty, his defenders will still say "They can't even name what specific crime he allegedly did!"

One of the first things Trump did in court was acknowledge to the judge that he understood the charges...

Or "we're on a roll here; let's keep going." It's hard to read tea leaves like this either way.

Huh? No it’s just increasing odds that the verdict comes in later today

Or they see no need for a lunch break if they're gonna be done in the early-to-mid rather than late afternoon or into the evening.

Jury speculation is foolish but I think there's a few reasonable assumptions that CAN be made:

1. If every Juror thinks Trump is guilty they'll probably come back today/tomorrow
2. If they don't come back within 36-48 hours (my personal thought is before Lunch tomorrow), then 1+Jurors are not convinced of guilt.
3. The longer deliberations go on the odds of a hung jury go up.

anything more than that just devolves into silly fanfic imo.

It could just mean they feel like they're making progress. The could be on count 6 of 34 for all we know.

No it usually means the jurors want to render a verdict ASAP. JMHO, I’d be very surprised if they reached a verdict today

Coming from the not-a-court-person world, 34 counts seems like a lot to get through. Is that fairly common, or is that something that we can expect would take a while to decide regardless?

With 34 counts, the odds that he is acquitted on all, or that there is a hung jury is nil. The question isn't a conviction, it's how many counts he's convicted on, and then if he suspends his campaign after. At that point, Biden could make a deal with him. If he drops out, pardon. If he remains in the race and tries to deny Biden what is given by God to him, prison.

If the jurors are taking the job seriously and diligently (and based on observations of their attentiveness and note-taking during the trial, they appear to be) then even if their minds were already made up going in, I would expect them to at least go through the evidence carefully for each of the 34 counts.  How long would that take, at a minimum?  Even if it's no more than 15 minutes per count (which seems very fast), that's 510 minutes or 8.5 hours.

You do understand that the President of the United States has no power to pardon convictions in state courts?
