What is the last election where both sides are good for you and you could vote for the opposite party?

In my case it'd be Clinton in 1996 or Gore in 2000 (Kerry is at the limit though, not sure if I'd be ok with him...). They're both alright still. While I had favorable views of Obama at the start, I soured on him really badly by 2014.

Would love to see your take.

2016 (though only if I lived in a competitive state) I thought Trump wouldn’t be a true conservative at the time and in Idaho I would have probably protest voted for the Constitution or Libertarian party. I saw Hillary as a strategic benefit for the GOP giving them time to takeover downballot.

As for in a swing state, I would say 2004 since I trusted Kerry more to handle the war before the troop surge.

I’m not even totally sold on voting GOP for President in 2024

1992 at the absolute latest, though 1976 is more likely.

1940, I would have voted for FDR but it’s one of the few elections in which I would have been fine with either of them winning.

Obama 2008 - 4 more years of policies similar to Bush wasn't right

Kerry 2004 - trusted Kerry more with the war

Gore 2000 - would've been ok with him winning

Clinton 1996 - Country was doing well in 1996, I would've been fine sticking with the incumbent.

To be honest, probably 2004. 1988, 1984, 1980, and 1976 are the last time I would have actually had a streak of democratic voting. I probably would have done Perot in 1992, then Dole in 1996, then Bush 2000, then republican after 2008, although I would not be opposed to a third party vote if I had serious betting that they could actually hit the 5 percent threshold in 2024

Out of curiosity
, why would you have voted against Reagan and HW Bush but vote for Dole?

2000. I would've voted Gore over Bush. This would've been my voting record since 1980 if I could go back and go it now. My first election in which I voted was 2008

1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Perot
1996 Clinton
2000: Gore
2004: Bush
2008: Write in. Wouldn't have voted either McCain or Obama in hindsight now.
2012: Romney
2016: Trump
2020: Trump

Probably a 60% chance I vote for Sanders in November 2020 and much more likely with hindsight.
