Quote
The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed and sent to the Senate on Tuesday legislation that would all but ban gender-affirming care for transgender people of any age in the state.

House Bill 2177, by Rep. Kevin West, R-Moore, and Rep. Jim Olsen, R-Roland, not only would ban all gender-reassignment therapies for minors, including hormones, puberty-blockers and surgery, but also would bar state funds or private insurers from covering those procedures for anyone, including adults.

Adults could still receive the treatments but would have to pay for them out of their own pockets.

Remember when conservatives swore up and down that this was just about teaching certain topics to third graders, and called us hysterical when we knew what they really wanted to do?

The bill now heads to the Senate, and if it passes there, to the Governor's desk.

Banning private insurers from covering care will never stand up in court.

I support the banning of state funds but insurers should retain the right to cover it.  Adults should have the right to do what they want with their bodies.

Now it's no longer "just a political stunt." This is massive overreach and effectively bans transgender people from existing... but I realize that is what the proponents of this bill want.

I understand why many Christian conservatives support this since God created them to be a certain gender but he also gives us free will. Being trans shouldn’t hurt or bother anyone and I think denying one’s humanity is immoral. Also because this isn’t an issue of regulation or greed, the government shouldn’t tell a private business what it can or cannot do since that smacks of corporatism.

Every red state is going to do thus. Every red state is going to ban all forms of "gender-affirming care" for people under 18, including detransitioning minors who've already started it (several states already have, most recently Mississippi).

And if they get away with both (they likely will under the current Supreme Court), they're likely to take aim at criminalizing the procedures for adults as well.

If adults want to contract for this I dont see why it should be banned.

No such thing as "gender affirmation" since gender is just made up nonsense but why ban an insurance company from covering some elective procedures? Unless you cannot buy insurance packages without and that you have to pay higher costs to cover it, then it might make some sense but even then a customer could always choose an insurance company that doesnt cover such. Really an insurance carrier is going to cover aything that is legal if they can profit from. Banning it seems anti capitalist. Didnt realize the GOP hated capitalism so much.

This is wrong and I hope the OK senate rejects this or the Governor vetoes it . If not , I hope the courts immediately strike this law down as it’s clearly unconstitutional
