In relatively recent years,

Pete Wilson probably made CA much more D than without him.

DeSantis made FL much more R. Had a generic R governor like Putman elected, FL would still move right a bit, but not at this pace.

Harry Reid for obvious reasons.

Back when machine politics were prevalent, a big boss can do a lot. But let's talk about recent cases.

Significantly.  In addition to those examples, Bush Jr. helped R's take over Texas for a generation.

In the old days when political machines were more accepted, this was even more dramatic.  Huey Long was basically Emperor of Louisiana.

Scott Walker did a lot to strengthen the Wisconsin GOP while he was in office.

In fact, I wonder if the favorable trends for Democrats in WOW would have started earlier/been stronger if he was never in office.

DeSantis helped accelerate FL's trend, but it was Scott who laid the groundwork with his Latino outreach during his Senate campaign. DeSantis owes his victory to that.

Scott will likely benefit from running with DeSantis and win easily in 2024 in return.
