Quote
House Bill 9 is headed to Governor Bill Lee, who has said he will decide whether to sign the bill once it reaches his desk. If he does, the measure will go into effect on April 1, two months ahead of Pride Month.

The bill bans “male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to prurient interest,” meaning of a sexual nature, either in public or if there is a minor present. The language is vague and makes no distinction between drag performers and transgender people.

This could be good or bad, depending on exactly how it’s implemented.

Sexual shows in front on minors should be 100% banned, but not every case of a man dressing as a women is sexual in nature.

Terrible.  My state is on track to do the same.

Many Republicans want to install a Christian version of Sharia Law.  They are not for freedom, and anyone who thinks they are has a bizarre idea of what “freedom” means.

I guess Some Like It Hot, one of the greatest comedy films of all time, will no longer be available to viewers in Tennessee.

In this case, it's the "freedom" to force others to their preferred standards of behavior.

The fake play scene in Essos wouldn’t qualify as “prurient interest”. Neither would Arya dressing as a boy to avoid captivity.

Blatantly unconstitutional and a prime example of why Republicans should not feel entitled to libertarian voters.

Whenever a conservative calls someone a bigot, 90+% of the time it's just hypocritical overcompensation to try justifying this type of Unapologetic prejudice.

It seems the article's title is not true because the governor has not decided whether to sign this yet.

From what bet I know about Bill Lee, I would be quite surprised bordering on shocked if he actually vetoed this. Maybe and only maybe if he used as a fig Leaf the fact that his legal advisors would undoubtedly tell him this is blatantly unconstitution would only waste tens of thousands in taxpayer dollars to unsuccessfully litigate. But even then I think he'd sign it and then just rail against liberal courts

I don't see why it would be unconstitutional any more than banning minors from strip clubs is, what it does is define drag shows as in the same category as strip clubs basically. Topic line is incorrect. This seems to be another case of "reacting to the headline and not the article" syndrome (or in this case even "reacting to the topic line and not the segment of the article in the post")

Still really silly, especially since I highly doubt there's many drag shows in Tennessee that minors can attend anyway.

big govt COMMUNISM now in TN, smh

big govt never stops expanding, they r just trying to take away ur rights

as with everything else, this isnt about drag shows, its about BIG GOVT deciding now they can do whatever they want to prevent "prurient interest" whatever the hell that means

sooner or later big govt will decide to put cameras in ur bathroom, and the sheeple will eat it up thinking that its a good idea for some reason

like if ur a woman, when ur old and u get cancer and they decide some billionaire needs treatment more than u do they will just pull up the camera footage of u sleeping in pants and the BIG GOVT DEATH PANELS will use that to justify denying ur cancer treatment bcuz u technically broke the law bcuz u were "dressed as a man" or some stupid thing

BIG GOVT COMMUNISM is here, BIG GOVT DEATH PANELS r here, OPEN UR EYES sheeple!

What’s the purpose of a drag queen show anyway, and what do both performers and the audience get out of it?

From my understanding it’s never intended to be sexual, so just wondering.

What’s the purpose of Halloween, or any costume? It’s a form of personal expression.

...

This is exactly my take.
The GOP might as well develop a name for their own American version of "Sharia Law," so that we can all properly call their ridiculous and horrible agenda, when discussing it.

Drag shows should not be banned anywhere as long as there aren’t any children present.

This is just more Republican cultural fascism on display.

Republicans are truly some of the strangest people.

Next they should ban all movies from being shown in public, because some of them are R-rated.

What if some high school film-making or film history class teacher shows some award-winning classic film with characters in drag like "Some Like it Hot" or "Tootsie", will they be arrested?  What about the same for some of the many episodes of classic SNL where Ayckroyd, Belushi, or Morris were in drag?  Will some reactionary parents insist the teachers be arrested?  Will the school system cave to the parents and cancel the class and fire the teacher?  Will it make national news?  Where does this stop?

This seems like it could be ripe for the ACLU to pull a John Scopes and convince some teacher to do the above.  Tennessee, once again.  Hmmm...

At first I thought this said:

Next they should be banned from being in public.

I think that's a better idea.
