On CNN's The Situation Room on Wednesday, February 21, 2007, NBA legend Charles Barkley announced himself during an interview that he has bought a house in Alabama in order to run for Governor of Alabama as an Independent in 2014.

2014?  That's an awfully long time in the future.

I had heard he was a Republican who was switching to Democrat to run against Riley in 2010

Not from the words from his own mouth.  He doesn't like Republicans and "Democrats aren't much better" in his words.  Alabama law requires one to live in the state for seven years before running for Governor, so Barkley decided to buy a house there in 2017 so he can run for Governor in 2014.
