The position of SoS was at some point considered a stepping stone for the presidency. Although foreign policy is no longer as important as during the Cold War, anyone who's competent enough to run the State Department could imho handle the presidency as well.

Do you believe Tony Blinken would be a good contender for the WH post-Biden? Tbh, I think he'd be a stronger GE candidate than Harris. I'm just not sure what his views on issues of domestic policy would be, though this gives him some flexibility to create a brand.

I doubt he's eager to run at this point, but the position he holds makes it worth to discuss the possibility at least. At least on paper he's more qualified than a lot of other Biden cabinet members.

He'd be a fine contender in a cycle where the electorate is clamoring for a "normalcy" candidate. Probably stronger in the sunbelt than the rust belt.

No Secretary of State has managed it because their office is a poisoned chalice.

In fact no cabinet secretary has done it in modern times.

They have to become Governors, Senators or VP's to have a chance.

That would allow to define himself in advance. That said, I think he's basically a mainstream Dem.

The appeal of someone outside of elected politics as President is that they are their own person, an outsider, like a businessman (Trump, Bloomberg, etc.) or historically popular general (Eisenhower). This appeal is undermined if the person has been closely associated with a particular politician throughout their own career.

Looking at Blinken’s resume, much of his experience has been as a functionary for Joe Biden, most notably and currently as his Secretary of State. So not only does he have no experience at any level as a candidate for office, he is already closely associated with Democratic presidents—Joe Biden and, to a lesser extent, Barack Obama and the Clintons. This is simply not the biography of someone who would appeal to many voters as a presidential candidate in his own right.
