The Cardinals end their 8-game losing streak, as they beat the Tigers 12-6. Paul Goldschmidt had 3 homers.

Cardinals are slowly but surely making a move out of the NL Central basement.

Libatore (sp?) looked great.  I think Nolan Gorman is my favorite player now.  That kid can beat the snot out of the ball, which isn't something you get out your second baseman very often.

The Yankees designated struggling Outfielder Aaron Hicks for assignment.

Got to wonder where Hicks ends up. He's hitting just .188, but assuming he clears waivers, somewhere like Oakland or Kansas City seems plausible, with the Angels also seeming at least theoretically possible as well.

Oakland A's broadcaster Glen Kuiper was fired after using a racial slur during a live broadcast earlier this month.

the last place team in the AL East (Tor 26-23) has a better record than the best team in the AL Central (Min 25-24).

Just a few a hours ago, the Phillies beat the Braves 6-4. Craig Kimbrel picked up the save, the 400th of his career, becoming the eighth pitcher to reach that milestone.

So, when are the Mets firing Buck Showalter?

They have way too much talent to be just two games over .500 at this point in the season.

There's been an ongoing crisis with Diamond Sports Group, which is in bankruptcy proceedings and holds the rights to multiple teams. They missed the payment to the Padres today, so going forward Major League Baseball will be directly responsible for getting Padres games on the air.

Quote
Diamond Sports Group won't be making its scheduled rights fee payment to the San Diego Padres by the end of its grace period on Tuesday, making the team's game against the Miami Marlins that afternoon the final one under Bally Sports.

Moving forward, through the end of the regular season and perhaps in perpetuity, Major League Baseball is expected to assume control of the Padres' broadcasts.

"We have been preparing for this groundbreaking moment. The Padres are excited to be the first team to partner with Major League Baseball to offer a direct-to-consumer streaming option through MLB.TV without blackouts while preserving our in-market distribution through traditional cable and satellite television providers," Padres CEO Erik Greupner said in a statement. "Our fans will now have unprecedented access to Padres games through both digital and traditional platforms throughout San Diego and beyond."

Diamond Sports Group, the Sinclair subsidiary that operates its broadcasts under the name Bally Sports, is navigating through bankruptcy proceedings in the wake of significant financial losses that were caused by the debt it incurred in the initial purchase and the accelerated rate of cord cutting throughout the country. Diamond owns the regional sports networks for 42 teams across the NHL, NBA and MLB, the latter of which comprises 14 teams.

Do you think Buck Showalter is the MLB's Marty Schotteinheimer or Doc Rivers? Great regular season coaches or coaches who can't win the championships despite their talent as a coach?

That's a pretty good comparison.

The Marlins's Luis Arraez is chasing .400.

Entering tonight's game against the Padres, Arraez has a .399 batting average (83 hits in 208 at bats).

The last person to hit .400 was Ted Williams back in 1941, and the last person to seriously chase .400 was Tony Gwynn in the strike-shortened 1994 season.

There's a strong argument that Ted Williams was the greatest MLB player of all time.   His accomplishments were amazing, despite losing some of his prime playing years to military service in WW2 and Korea.

Great story about his .400 season: entering the final day, his batting average was .3995 -- which would have rounded up to .400 for the record books.  The Red Sox were scheduled to play a doubleheader with the Philadelphia Athletics, and the manager offered to let Williams take the day off to preserve his average.  He refused and played both games, going 4-for-5 in the first and 2-for-3 in the second to finish at .406.

The White Sox can hire Paul Konerko but they want to keep these Ozzie Gillum types they topedoed their season already, its not the fact that Konerko is a star only, he can bring free agents to White Sox that the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros are getting

just like the Lakers are finished, Dallas with Kyrie Irving is recruiting more stars the Mavs only won one its time for them to win again or Suns but if Nuggets win they are a Dynasty

The Braves own the Mets, chapter 637:

The Braves beat the Mets last night in a wild one, 13-10 in 10 innings, coming back from 9-5 and 10-7 deficits.  The Braves overcame deficits of at least 3 runs in all 3 games to sweep the series.  It was the first time in Mets history that they've lost 3 consecutive games in which they led by 3 or more runs, and the first time the Braves have won 3 consecutive such games since moving to Atlanta in 1966.  The loss also broke the Mets' streak of 122 consecutive games won in which they led after 8 innings.
