I'm glad AP is starting to offer this course and I disagree with DeSantis trying to block it, but it does seem like the course was developed during the peak unregulated activism of the late 2010s and 2020. I think if it was developed now the content would be different. The other AP History courses are quite meat and potatoes based and cover mostly historical events and people, but this course is much more sociological.

The AP student body is overwhelmingly White and Asian. A main goal of this course is to attract more Black students, but are White students also supposed to take this course? If it was about knowledge of historical events that's one thing and fairly objective, but in academia where scholarship isn't just knowing the basic facts, African American studies are conducted almost exclusively by Black scholars and White views are not taken seriously (for a good reason most of the time). In addition, it's commonly held that it is uncomfortable for a White person to talk about the Black experience but that is what would have to happen if a White person took this course.

If the student body of the class is overwhelmingly Black, I hope it also comes with an increase in Black enrollment in other AP Classes. The issue with the AP program is not mainly that it's too Eurocentric, but more that non-White/Asian enrollment in courses that have nothing to do with race or society is so abysmal. IMO it's more important for AP to encourage more Black kids to take AP Calc or other core AP classes than it is for AP to create another class that might not help Black students if it just becomes the token Black class.

In addition to proposing raising teacher pay, the governor said he wants to create a special category in the education budget that would go toward funding for teacher raises specifically, so money can’t be used for anything else. DeSantis wants $200 million more for teacher salaries.

“So you could increase education funding, doesn’t mean (school boards are) going to raise teacher pay, they may use it for other things,” DeSantis said. “And so when we said as as part of our education funding in the state of Florida, we’re going to create a special category of that funding that has to go to raise teacher salaries. So we created this provision in our budget in the Florida Education Finance program.”

He also proposed a teachers’ bill of rights to empower teachers to discipline students in class, and allows teachers to file complaints if the district allegedly tells a teacher to violate Florida law and then disciplines them for it.

Other bills he supports have already been filed by the state legislature, including a bill to create a constitutional amendment to make school board races partisan, a bill to create school board term limits of eight years, and a bill to stop teachers unions from being able to get union dues in a direct deposit from teachers’ paychecks.

DeSantis also wants unions not to be able to conduct union business at work, school union executives to not be paid more than the highest-paid union member, and for unions to have 60% representation in a school district.

Also his huge 2022 win shows that he does know how to appeal to independents and some Democrats and he is no where near as extreme as you guys think.
