Let's discuss cases of a major party nominating a candidate, but that's party's voters bolted in part or stayed home.

I'm pretty sure that much more than 28% of the electorate in 1924 were registered Democrats, but that's about the percentage that Davis got.

This is the one that came to mind, the other would be 1964 for Goldwater, many Republicans refused to vote for him and went to Johnson instead.

Smith in 1928 was abandoned by the Southern Wing which was then the prominent wing, but on the other hand he was beloved by the Northeastern wing which was in its infancy at the time.

House Democrats did end up triaging Carter, while Senate Democrats did not. Well we saw what the result of that was

Very true. Smith was the one who originally turned MA, RI and NY into the Safe D states they are today. He also made NYC the Safe D city that it is today (back in 1920 and 1924, every borough voted Republican, in fact).

I remember there was this very nice article somewhere that had several maps, showing how far each county's presidential voting streaks go back, with a lot of commentary. Sadly, I can't find it now  Sad , but I remember finding it interesting that there were a lot of urban counties that have voted straight Democratic starting with Smith in 1924. A few NYC boroughs, of course, but the only other one I remember is Ramsey County, MN (home to St Paul).

The '68 run for Wallace could count for Humphrey. They did just abandon him by voting for Wallace or, heaven forbid, Nixon
