RIP to a legend. Won his first World Cup at 17 and his third at 29. No one will ever match that.

Rest in peace to a soccer legend.

He even visited the White House at one time in 1975, here with President Ford:

One of the top 5 most famous human beings of the world in the 20th century.
The 20th century is slowly dissapearing.

Based on this criteria, the 20th century will 'disappear' (in terms of people who lived in it being alive) in around the 2110s assuming life expectancy stays about the same.

I'm very ill-informed when it comes to sports, but when it came to international football Pele was always the first player I thought of. So that really tells you something about why he was such a legend if even I was able to recognize him.

Forget about Messi or (either) Ronaldo or even Maradona.

Pele *was* the GOAT. Soccer's answer to Ali, and the nearest it had to a Bradman.

A lot of tributes from people who don't really understand football have featured the usual nonsense about how he 'changed the game' and was a great 'innovator' and so on, but the very opposite was the case and this was why he was so popular as a player: his style of play was fundamentally classic in an era in which the game was changing rapidly and in a direction that a lot of purists disliked.

Now, now, Pele's politics weren't exactly fantastic, but I don't think he was quite as right-wing as Bradman Smiley

This, but Maradona was right up there with him in the 1980s.

Pelé used to be criticized by the left in the past due to politics.
He was a black very famous athlete in the 1960s but he was never an activist for racial justice.
He wasn't a supporter of the dictator General Emílio Gastarrazu Médici, but he attended official events and appeared in the pictures, and so, critics said that he was used as a propaganda tool.

But now, everyone recognizes that he was very important for the Brazilian soft power abroad, for the self esteem of the black people and for the Third World due to his talent and his sucess, and that since he was an athlete and not a politician, his political views don't matter.
