What you have to understand is that down deep, McCain is shallow.
First, McCain does NOT deal in facts, he just makes things up (remember the $50 to pick lettuce?).
Second, many of McCain's statements on matters of public policy are, to put it mildly, strange. Recently (last year) he stated that he was opposed to gay marriage unless there was a ceremony involved!?!
Third, McCain has no honor. He will lie whenever it is convenient (remember in 2000 when he denied he had approved an attack on Bush in a primary and then the next day when it was proved that he had, he acknowledged it with no explanation for the denial).
Fourth, he does not work well with others. McCain has no friends in the Senate because he is constantly verbally stabbing other Senators in the back.
Fifth, McCain has no real political philosphy other than he should run everything. This explains why he can blithly jump back and forth on matters like abortion, the right to keep and bear arms, taxes, etc. For McCain does not see his changing positions as inconsistent since for him the only matter is to say whatever he thinks will advance his election to higher office.
