Did some Ds vote against it because they want to see him remain in congress, so that he's a continued albatross for Rs or something?  Otherwise I see no way for them to vote no. He's objectively done more than enough to be voted out of congress.

It's possible that some of them want to give the Ethics Committee investigation a chance to finish first.  I'm just speculating here.

That is, at least, the reasoning Rep. Jeff Jackson gave in response to a question about this on the North Carolina Subreddit:

Quote
House ethics committee is finishing their investigation and report. It will be done in about three weeks. The better precedent is to expel members only post-conviction or post-ethics investigation. That way you get at least some due process - either internal or external - before expulsion. That’s existing precedent, at least as I understand it. This vote was basically asking us to change precedent in a way that’s unnecessary (we can wait three weeks) and could be really dangerous in the hands of a future Congress.

He should definitely resign - no question. And I’m fine on voting to kick him out. Just need to make sure we don’t do that in a way that opens Pandora’s box down the road.

That seems fair, all things considered.

He is innocent until proven guilty, we shouldn't be expelling people without due process.
Except a lot of these republicans wouldn't hesitate to expel a democrat for the same thing, no? Or a republican in you know, a safe R district?

This whole ordeal along with the Bob Menendez sh-t has really given us a great opportunity to find out just how many people think there should be little if any ethical standard for elected officials. Yet many of those same people will complain in the abstract about how corrupt and unethical the DC swamp is.

The Democrats who voted to not expel him are stupid. Of course some of them (like Golden) probably are afraid of the backlash of voting to expel a Republican, it was still a dumb move.

I was originally hoping the expulsion would pass, but I'm persuaded by Raskin's argument that I posted above.  It's better to wait until either the Ethics Committee finishes or Santos gets convicted.

Except again, most republicans would vote against expelling him regardless of what this "probe' finds. They simply don't want to trigger a special election in which democrats would be strongly favored.

You're probably right, but even so it's better to wait.  Any Republican who votes to keep him after a conviction or ethics recommendation to expel would demonstrably be doing so solely for political reasons -- and can then be attacked on that basis.  But until that happens, they can reasonably defend voting to keep him with the same argument that Raskin made.

No, these people are actually being smart and thinking about the long-term impacts of expelling a non-convicted Representative.

That’s a wild list of names

That was my first thought, that this is an eclectic group of Dems… unified by one man

I dont know the reasons why those Ds voted against expulsion, but I can see why they might want to wait for some sort of conviction. If the expulsion had succeeded, Rs would probably have expulsion votes every few months on whichever D they disagree with that week. And when the expulsion would fail to get the 2/3 vote, Fox news would definitely cite it as 'Rs took care of their own, why dont corrupt Ds do the same'.

Does someone really need to be a convicted criminal to be expelled? Santos' entire life was a fabrication that deceived his constituents in ways few other representatives have had the audacity to do.

I think at the very least his constituents would want a new election as soon as possible.
