Many Orthodox Jews report "American" ancestry

As is well known, the majority of American ancestry is reported by whites of colonial British Isles ancestry, especially in the South. 

Another group that reports "American" ancestry...Orthodox Jews in NY/NJ.  They must make up a significant proportion of American responses in the region.

Interesting.

I always thought Orthodox Jews reporting a variety of eastern slavic ethnicities was odd, even if that was the original country of origin however many years ago. They are a distinct minority/identity in that country, speaking another language and practicing another religion, but I guess there's not a better option. I wonder how Kurds respond. Do they say they are Iraqi or do they say they are Kurdish?
