Btw I think the reason you are seeing such variety in polls is cause a huge chunk of Republicans at this moment are pretty soft supporters of either candidate so because of that it’s very hard to get even close to an accurate result .

It is still worse for Trump though given how hard his support was from the GOP during his presidency and even in 2021 .

Teddy did in 1912, he won most of the primaries people got to vote in but was screwed over at the convention, Van Buren ran in 1844 but didn't get the nomination at the convention as well. Hoover also ran in 1940 but didn't enter any primaries and also failed to get the nomination at the convention.

True, but primaries in some form or another have existed longer. They asked if any former president has lost a primary and every single one who has run has lost besides cleavland

Closest we got to that has perhaps 1980. Ford considered to run, but opted out later on. Most likely he would have lost to Raygun.
