This very much could have been me given Carter was a moderate democrat and the Nixon pardon was unprecedented at the time

Reagan diehards who hated Ford and decided a relatively conservative Democrat would be the lesser evil.

Southerners registered to vote in the Republican primary as early as 76 would probably have been diehard partisans and unlikely to vote for Carter, extremely less likely IMO then registered Democrats in the south were to vote for Reagan in a general election.

While Woody Hayes himself maintained a strong friendship with Ford throughout The Ten-Year War I’d imagine there are at least a few hawkish Ohioans who could never stomach voting for a Michigan Man.

Someone who felt a "DC-outsider" should be elected in 1976, regardless of party.

Not all states had closed primaries. In fact, Reagan was actually doing better in open primaries.

The answer to this question is quite a few southerners, but I'm sure the voters existed in significant numbers everywhere except maybe New England.
