Absolutely not. Fags are the leading contributor to lung cancer and need to be removed from the public lexicon and visibility as much as possible.

Yes it is unacceptable. If you can’t find a way to insult someone without resorting to bigoted slurs, then you need to grow up.

The correct answer. If you can't be called the slur, you can't use the slur. It's like the N word.

I'm not gay but a racist (and by racist I mean "admires Hitler" racist) on a libertarian forum called me an anti-white Marxist f****t along with several other users who were also not gay.

Everyone finds some kind of term offensive and meanings of words and what is offensive changes ovee time. It is all subjective nonsense really. However, you shouldnt seek to intentionally offend others though so really best to avoid all such words and swear words as well. All course language and slurs in general just make you sound unintelligent anyway. I do not really differentiate any sort of course language, I find it all distasteful and avoid.

And you being straight, that word carried as much weight/meaning/power to hurt as a lily-white person with blonde hair and blue eyes being called a N*****.

It mostly depends on how society treats certain words. For example, in the first half of the 20th century it was generally acceptable to use a certain three-letter word as an abbreviation for Japanese, but now that term is generally considered a slur. Likewise, the name “Gaylord” lost favor after the 1960s because of how people may interpret the name now compared to how it may be interpreted back them.

Billie Joe Armstrong is allowed to say it during performances of American Idiot.

It’s very distasteful to call someone it insultingly, but I should be able to sing the lyrics to “American Idiot” without having to censor myself.

I'm not opposed to the short-form version being used in certain contexts where it's VERY clear that it's meant as a parody / satire of homophobes and not to be taken literally.

The long-form version should only be used be LGBTQ people, but preferably not at all. Hopefully gay people eventually stop using it and hopefully black people eventually stop using the N word, at some point in the distant future.

I've been called both "f-" and "n-", but I still think me using it is probably not a good idea.

I think either no one should say it, or its acceptable use should depend on context. These weird rules about how it's one of the most evil words in history, but simultaneously it can somehow be "reclaimed" (whatever that even means) is just dumb, and it just divides people even more. And everyone knows it's dumb.

It's certainly acceptable/appropriate to use when writing literature -- books, plays, movies -- in order to convey the idea that some people are still homophobic.

"The government is rightly not allowed to stop you from saying this word" does not mean "it is morally and socially okay for you to say this word".

much like how I said for the "r-word", it depends on context. There's never a blanket judgement to be made on this stuff. It's impossible to make it go into one category unconditionally and to try and do so is not only unproductive but simply stupid from a linguistic perspective.
