Ancestral copperhead type voters scattered throughout the Midwest, Maryland and Pennsylvania. There’s a handful of northern rural counties that were staunchly Democrat going back to the civil war (almost the inverse of unionist Republican strongholds in the south) and many flipped in the 20s. Some already had by 1924 but my guess is that more did perhaps in response to the Al Smith nomination which changed the face of the northern Democratic Party to one of big city immigrants/Catholics and this led to rural areas with a xenophobic history flipping for good.
