Oh, great. I thought it all seemed too easy last month.

Guess now the future of Brazilian democracy is in the hands of the same people who falsely imprisoned Lula only a few years ago. Fun times ahead.

Doubt this will do any better than Trump's legal challenges to the last US election, tbh.

(biased judges or not)

Not really.

Alexandre de Moraes, the Supreme Court justice who currently leads the TSE, said in a ruling seen by Reuters that Bolsonaro's right-wing electoral coalition, which filed the complaint, must present its full audit for both rounds of last month's vote within 24 hours, or he would reject it.

Keep in mind Bolsonaro is only complaining about the second round for obvious reasons e en though the same machines were used and there's no conceivable argument to allow the first but not second. This should go as far as Trump's attempts.

To be clear, I didn't mean to imply they're going to reinstate Bolsonaro. Just that it's kind of nerve-wracking that we have to rely on this caste of people given their track record. I still expect Lula to be sworn in next year, though.

This means nothing in practical terms. It’s mostly for show for the crowd from the party in order to retain the base they attracted and is already being treated as as a joke and not seriously by anyone that matters, including electoral courts saying they won’t even analyze it if the party doesn’t question the 1st round (which elected tons of PL people in congress) as well.

Mostly a footnote on the media here, which is ridiculing it and calling it hypocritical. Focus is mostly in the World Cup, only the most bitter loser Bolsominions still are obsessed about politics and elections that already passed.

Exactly what Red Velvet said. This has the same chance of success as the plea for help to extraterrestrials, from Bolsonaro supporters, to save Brazil. (Yeah, they are actually asking for help from aliens) Grin

Aliens at least are more likely to respond to them than a tire.

I agree with the noise hypothesis. But even if I would not, there’s nothing wrong with this. Bolsonaro is well within his rights to challenge the election in court. As is any other losing candidate (including Trump).

The bad part of this is that the MAGA people are trying to make having a republican form of government a partisan issue everywhere, not just here.

Brazil court rejects Bolsonaro party complaint over vote

Lmao, not only did they reject him, but they fined his party 4.3m dollars for even asking since it was ‘in bad faith’.

Good job Brazil.

Apparently the Brazilian courts disagree with you. And they're right: frivolous lawsuits are a serious attack on the integrity of a justice system, and should not be tolerated. It's frankly scandalous that the US doesn't seem to have any mechanism to punish them.

As I said, this was seen as a joke from the start.

I love that they still punished Bolsonaro’s Liberal party with a R$22.9 Million fine AND also blocking them from partisan funding. If you do nothing sends message of permission to these far-right people.

Not to mention, Bolsonaro’s future salary from the party post-presidency might be affected by this because they will need to save money.

USA has a big problem with their electoral system in the sense it’s very chaotic and decentralized. Every state does whatever the hell they want instead of following one single organized standard.

They also don’t have a centralized judicial system dedicated for elections because of that. It’s that judicial system that holds these people accountable in Brazil through punishment of illegal actions, otherwise we would be in similar or possibly even worse situation as USA.

So the knock off Trump tries his own knock off coup and it's failed already, fitting.

Calling this stunt a coup is a bit of a compliment, IMO. There is a Portuguese saying about this kind of stunts: "Meter os pés pelas mãos" (Putting your feet in between your hands), which means that when someone does something completely desperate and inadequate, it ends horribly wrong for them.

The court said the complaint was made "in bad faith" and fined the party 22.9m reais (£3.5m; $4.3m).

Superior Electoral Court (TSE) President Alexandre de Moraes said the PL complaint was "offensive to democratic norms" and had sought to "encourage criminal and anti-democratic movements".

Wait, so their response was essentially: “No. And f**k you for even trying.”

That’s wild, and sort of impressive.

He’s been unflaggingly based during this election cycle, but he was actually a PSDB member and nominated to the STF by Temer.

This doesn't matter. Bolsonaro knows it doesn't matter, it's just symbolic. There will be a peaceful transfer of power on January 1. When Brazilian democracy is more resilient than your country's democracy, you know you're in deep s**t.

He got in the first place because Lula was unjustly imprisoned.

The Yair Netanyahu/Eduardo Bolsonaro podcast was fantastic. Most energizing thing since "Hail Trump".
