They either thought Carter was to the right of Ford or they always vote for the most experienced candidate.

An African American?  I know Carter went from like 80% among them in 1976 to around 92% in 1980.

Why on Earth would George McGovern vote for Ford in 1976? No one thought Ford was to the left of Carter. Plus Ford was part of the Nixon adminsitration

Yeah, I find it hard to understand too.

Carter led the "Never McGovern" movement at the 1972 Dem Convention. McGovern probably didn't forget that.

And much of the Northeast. Ford was a much more compatible choice for a certain type of voter up there than was Reagan. If Anderson hasn't also been a candidate they'd have been a lot more Ford/Carter voters.
