Most of the schools in metro detroit closed b/c of cold temps.  But why did the private schools?  They don't run buses.  Of course, my school (private) was one of the 3 in Wayne county (2 other public schools) stayed open.  My weather station said -3.4 degrees w/ -17 wind chill this morning.  Our principal let us all wear coats (although I wasn't cold so didn't) in class b/c he had taken a lot of heat from students who were ticked off (pun intended).  But I really don't see why schools who don't run buses should have closed.  There's talk of COLDER temps tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

Uhh...I know that in PA, private schools use public school busing (everyone pays the property tax which funds schools)...if the public schools closed, they wouldn't be sending buses out for the private schools...so most private schools closed.

Err. I have no idea, its been a long time since I've had to worry about it. But that is the general rule.

I went to a private Catholic high school and I don't remember ever having a single snow day over the entire four years.

But then in college there was a snow storm so bad my junior year that we had one. I didn't even know snow days were possible in college until that happened.

I know my school, which is private, is closed tomorrow and yes we do use public busing, as do most other private schools in PA.

My (public) school doesn't run buses, we were closed today, and we're closed tomorrow.  When I found out it was closed tomorrow I started jumping around the housing screaming of joy.

Our principal let us all wear coats

You're not allowed to wear coats normally?  that's odd.

Wait, why would you close schools with -17 wind chill?  The actual temperature this morning was -17 Fahrenheit (-27C), and the power went out for about an hour, but we still didn't have school closed.

I don't know about INks, but there was 2+ feet of  snow in 2 days for a lot of Buffalo suburbs -- a lot of driving bans  in effect, too. So I can see why a lot of the areas closed. But not my college. I trekked out for my 6 PM class.

please add the 'u' in order to not be one of them, but I concur.  Michigan State hasn't had a closing for classes in 26 years.

Kids already go to school far too much.. a few days off when the weather is unpleasant is a great idea.  Also for the poor put upon underpaid teachers.

Hey, my school did not close despite a snowstorm. And that storm was our worst as even the streets were covered with snow. There were 23 accidents in Denton that morning alone.

Even I almost got into an accident that day myself! I pulled away just in time, but lost control of my car and it hit the guardrail. Fortunately there was only minor damage and I was not hurt at all.

I am not used to driving in the snow at all, having only driven in it three times in my life. I can't wait until I can get somewhere where it doesn't snow!

You'd never survive up north. Here we don't fear snow so much...it's ice that causes the real problems.

Syracuse University doesnt close school for anything. In its 100+ year existence school has been closed due to weather 3 times. Yes, the wind chill here was around -17F yesterday.
